DOOM
A pure adrenaline rush from the depths of hell.
Developer: id Software / Bethesda Softworks
Release Year: 2016
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
DOOM plays at the pinnacle of its genre with relentless action and innovative combat mechanics in its single-player mode, but its multiplayer experience and technical flaws detract from the overall package. If you are looking for a pure demon hunt, don't miss it, but keep your multiplayer expectations low.
Review
DOOM challenges the slow pace of modern shooters, pushing you not to take cover and hide, but to dive directly into the heart of the action. This bold philosophy shows that the developers designed the game with the confidence of saying, 'this is the action, take it and enjoy it.' The game's single-player mode offers a pure adrenaline rush, as if bursting from the depths of hell; every conflict forces you to constantly move, tear enemies apart, and fight savagely to survive.
The most striking feature is, without a doubt, its brutal yet incredibly satisfying combat mechanics. As one player noted, 'Every Glory Kill feels like completing a ballet choreography with blood and metal music.' Rushing towards an enemy instead of panicking when you run out of ammo is a feeling I haven't experienced in any other game. This 'push forward, kill, and heal' philosophy sharply distinguishes DOOM from its rivals in the genre; unlike more tactical shooters like Call of Duty or Destiny, DOOM creates its own league by offering pure, relentless, and rewarding savagery. Critics describe the single-player mode as 'at its best,' with high scores like 8.6 on Metacritic and 8.05 on IGN serving as concrete proof of this success. This is a feat achieved by only five AAA games in the last three years.
However, the brilliance of the single-player mode is overshadowed by the multiplayer component. The multiplayer mode is, unfortunately, a disappointment. You encounter a 'derivative and poorly thought-out' mode; the same maps, the same modes, and a stale feeling leave no trace of DOOM's unique spirit. Weapon balance is disastrous; some weapons are completely dysfunctional, while others dominate the game, killing competition. In an era where rivals offer much more stable and creative multiplayer experiences, DOOM's mediocrity creates a serious disconnect in the 'complete package' experience it promises.
Technical issues are also present. Crashes during initial loading and sudden frame rate drops in crowded battles are unacceptable flaws for an AAA production. Bugs like enemies getting stuck inside walls also diminish the overall quality. While the single-player campaign is rich in content and offers high replayability, the multiplayer mode's 'same maps, same modes' cycle makes the content volume shallow and severely undermines its replayability.
If you are looking for a satisfying and seamless multiplayer experience beyond the single-player mode, you will be disappointed here. However, if you want a pure demon hunt that will nail you to your seat, true to its roots but revived with a modern touch, then DOOM is for you. While the game brings a fresh breath to the shooter genre with its single-player campaign, the shortcomings in its multiplayer aspect and technical flaws prevent the overall experience from reaching its peak.
