Review
Elden Ring arrived with the ambition to redefine the genre boundaries, bringing FromSoftware's familiar difficulty to a massive open world. This ambition echoed in every corner of the Lands Between, bringing with it both awe-inspiring freedom of exploration and controversial technical glitches. While it received universal acclaim from critics, performance issues and certain design choices during the launch period cast a shadow over the user experience.
The game's greatest achievement is its unique world design, which doesn't hold your hand but encourages you to progress solely through your curiosity. The moment you step into the Lands Between, you feel that every ruin, every dungeon, and every hidden path has been meticulously crafted. Unlike the "to-do list" mentality of most open-world games, Elden Ring's organic sense of discovery keeps players glued to the screen for hours and raises the bar for replayability. Many players report finding new things to explore even after more than 80 hours, offering significantly more value compared to many single-player titles in the same price segment. The fact that 94% of over 800,000 players on Steam rated it "Very Positive" reveals that the ultimate experience for the vast majority overcame these glitches.
However, this epic adventure was marred, especially during the launch period on PC, by frame rate drops and stutters. These technical glitches severely undermined the fluidity of the experience and overshadowed the promised epic journey. Furthermore, the repetition of some mini-dungeons and bosses in the open world feels like soulless, repetitive copies of Bloodborne's random Chalice Dungeons, yet without the advantage of randomness. This can be seen as a design regression compared to FromSoftware's own previous works. Item management issues, such as having to constantly offload crafting system items like throwing pots and perfumes to storage, can also create a feeling of wasted player time. Camera angles in boss fights and platforming sections can also be annoying at times.
Despite all these challenges, FromSoftware's signature challenging yet fair combat mechanics, combined with the rich mythology woven with contributions from George R. R. Martin, create an unforgettable experience. The freedom to shape your character as you wish reinforces the feeling of crafting your own adventure. The game offers not just a challenge, but also a universe full of secrets and deep lore that stays with you long after, waiting to be explored. If you are patient, ready to overcome technical glitches, and want to dive into a world that holds a surprise around every corner, Elden Ring will reward you immensely, and this experience will stay with you for a long time.
