Platforms: PC

MECCHA CHAMELEON promises unique fun with its artistic twist on the Prop Hunt concept, but this brilliant idea is overshadowed by fundamental technical glitches and a weak multiplayer experience. If you're looking for a creative hide-and-seek experience with friends and can overlook some rough edges, it's worth trying.

Review

MECCHA CHAMELEON promises a fresh take on the genre by introducing an ingenious hiding mechanic built around imitating works of art in the classic game of hide-and-seek. This idea forces players to transform into a painting or an object to escape the hunter's gaze; however, behind this creative concept lie technical glitches that severely undermine the experience. The game's core premise of visual mimicry is unfortunately overshadowed by some significant functional shortcomings.

The game's greatest strength lies in the pure fun it delivers when you gather with friends. Watching a player skillfully mimic a painting and slip right past the hunter creates moments that will have you bursting with laughter. This demonstrates just how enjoyable the fresh perspective brought to the Prop Hunt genre can be. Its simple yet deep gameplay offers the opportunity to try a different strategy every time, increasing replayability and making it quite appealing content for streamers.

However, some of MECCHA CHAMELEON's core mechanics struggle to meet expectations. The color copying tool, the eyedropper, often fails to accurately capture the color you want. The low resolution of character models makes detailed and convincing imitations impossible; everything you draw remains pixelated. What's even worse, menus containing fundamental settings like keybinds or microphone changes are dysfunctional, preventing players from personalizing their experience.

The multiplayer experience, on the other hand, is practically a minefield. Even joining the same lobby as your friends becomes a game of chance; there's no server search bar or direct invite system. Lobbies are overrun with cheaters and abusive players because an effective ban system is absent. Even if you kick a player from the server, they can instantly rejoin, severely damaging the game's social structure. What's more, new players joining a lobby mid-match can see the map and the locations of hidden players, revealing them to the hunter and completely eliminating any sense of competition. And to top it all off, there's no option to mute the endless whistling sounds in the lobby.

MECCHA CHAMELEON is a concrete example of a brilliant idea failing to fully realize its potential due to a lack of implementation and basic quality control. If you're after a unique concept and aren't deterred by technical glitches and multiplayer chaos, it can offer a worthwhile experience, especially given its affordable price. However, if you're looking for a flawless experience or a competitive environment, it's best to keep your expectations low.
